I have to tell you about a funny little thing that happened last night! Big Papa Hemingway (the hubs) got home from work at about a quarter to midnight last night. After he got settled into bed and we were both dozing off there was an awful annoying sound coming from somewhere. In my half asleep state I sat up and asked him in a very annoyed voice if he had set the alarm on his phone. He said no crazy- that is a cricket! A flipping cricket had we presume hitched a ride into the house with one of us. Well this was just freaking great! I got up and shined my cell phone light over where the sound was coming from and it promptly stopped. I figured I had it running scared and it was done for the night. Oh boy was I wrong! It started almost immediately back up with its singing. Nick got up and started searching for it by cell phone light. I am not totally positive why we didn't turn on the light but the whole time we searched using our cell phones as flashlights. I vote that it is because we were so tired and unaware of how idiotic that was! Anywho... We thought it was in a basket so Nick took it out in the hallway and shut he door. We thought we were home free!! Not that that would have actually gotten rid of the cricket- but you know what they say out of sight out of mind or in this case out of ear shot out of mind. We get settled back in and start dozing and lo and behold it starts back up! So Nick jumps up and starts hitting a stack of bins with his shoe. The cricket stops and starts with every thump of his shoe! It is mocking us now!! Much cursing and thumping and shaking of things ensued! This may seem like a bit much but one lone cricket singing in your face is not charming like it is out in the woods with all its buddies singing in time with him. It is like Chinese water torture!! Crick crick crick! It will break you. Finally we fell asleep from pure exhaustion. Just to get up and get Big Papa to work by 6.

Cricket- 1

I am so in love with this baby! Well not so much baby but toddler but that seems like such an awful thing to say! We had a momentous thing happen the other day. I am one proud momma. I was busy making stew when my little Lola started asking for celery which was awesome all by itself but I decided to throw some peanut butter on it. I was expecting her to turn her nose up at it but to my delighted surprise she started munching away!! Oh yeah that is right!!! I wish I had some raisins to make the little ants for a true ants on a log! I may be super lame for being so excited about this but I want both of the babies (the other "baby" is a three year old!) to love healthy food. I can not be more thrilled ya'll!!!
Big Munch!!
Sweetest girl baby ever!!
P.S. Forgive the messy house in the pictures- I sometimes feel like the kids are more important than a perfectly clean house. Does that make me a bad mother? Well if it does then so be it!!

Frosted Oatmeal Cookies

Oh boy! These are delightful!

1 cup white sugar
1 cup butter or shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup old fashioned oats
1 3/4 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Cream sugar, butter, eggs and vanilla. Then throw everything else in and mix until all incorporated. Refrigerate for 4 to 5 hours or overnight. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees. Drop by mounded teaspoons on ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten with bottom of cup dipped in sugar. Bake for 10 minutes. Once cooled frost with whatever butter cream frosting you prefer and enjoy!

A couple tips! Mine spread a whole lot because I wasn't patient enough to refrigerate them. My next go round I will for sure do that step. Make sure you don't over bake them. That makes them overly crispy. The frosting isn't necessary but it really makes them delightful! I used homemade butter cream but store bought frosting would be just great too!

My haul! Woot!!

I planted a macho jalapeno plant this year way way too late in the season. I really didn't have high hopes of getting any peppers but I am getting some! Oh baby oh baby!! I might get enough from my one little plant to bottle one whole mason jar of peppers to pickle. That may not impress anyone else but I have the worlds blackest thumb so the fact that the plant didn't die an early death is pretty amazing. Not too mention that I planted it way too close to a tomato plant that has taken over the world! I am surprised that it has not suffocated and died. Oh well! Live and learn. Plus I am pretty impatient so I want to pick the itty bitty peppers long before they are ready. They are tiny and I love them! And to top it all off- they have a serious bite! Now I need to find a good recipe to pickle them before they are all eaten.

Purple mirror yo!!

I found this mirror at a garage sale saturday for count it- TWO BUCKS!! I was excited because I had seen tons of re-vamped mirrors all over the inter-web. I was thinking maybe white but yeah I went with purple! Totally opposite of white but what can I say? I love bright colors lately! BTW spray paint is the coolest thing! I may be obsessed with it! It went so fast and easy. It was so easy in fact that I doubt a tutorial is needed. A few tips however:

1. Clean the part you are painting really well. If you don't it can bubble
and peel.
2. Spray paint in a bunch of thin coats. So hard for me because I am
the least patient person alive!! It makes a big difference in your
end product though. No drips and ugly pools of paint.

Forgive the awful pictures! I will post a better after picture once a home is found for my rad mirror! Plus you can only do so much with a dinky digital camera. I am learning how to get the most out of it as we speak!

I covet!!!

OH how I love these shoes!! The first time I saw them I had a hard time getting them off my mind the rest of the day. A huge smile came to my face at any point that an image of them popped into my head! I am as we speak saving my sheckles for a pair of these fabulous shoes. HHMMM? Is it sick and wrong to want to sell plasma to hurry the saving along?! Yeah probably no matter how tempting it might be!

Corn and Black Bean Salsa

YAY! This is my first official post. What a great day. This recipe is everywhere really. I am just sharing my version.
Keep in mind that this recipe is all to my families taste.

Corn and Black Bean Salsa

2 15.25 oz cans black beans
1 package frozen yellow corn
6-7 Roma tomatoes
1 medium red onion
2 bunches cilantro
1/2 to 3/4 C jalapeno slices
1/2 tbsp minced garlic.

Open and rinse both cans of black beans until water runs clear in a pasta strainer. Add frozen corn to strainer and allow to thaw. Mince up jalapeno slices and garlic very fine and throw in medium sized bowl. Cut up tomatoes and red onion to about the same size as beans and corn. Add all ingredients to bowl and mix up. Open up your favorite bag of corn chips and enjoy!!
*Side note: this is one of the few things that is best the day it is made
